Publications and Reports, 1947–

After World War II, government agencies started providing major funding for diverse research efforts at IIHR and elsewhere. This record set includes unpublished IIHR reports for research funded by both governmental and private grants and contracts. A limited number of professional journal publications are also included. Thus, the record set gives a good view of IIHR’s applied and fundamental research and contract work spanning the decades following World War II, although a few of the reports precede the war.

This record set could be considered the continuation of the “Early IIHR Research,” and “World War II Research,” record sets. This record set could also be paired with IIHR’s reprint series to give a comprehensive picture of research completed during the stated time period.

The record set, presented as originally found in the IIHR files, consists of 11 boxes of papers arranged chronologically, dated from 1947 to 2008, with one additional box (Box 1) of undated papers, arranged alphabetically by author, that presumably span the same decades. “Additional Materials,” includes reports located in 2017, some of which overlap chronologically with the first seven boxes. This makes for a total of 12 boxes in the entire record set. With few exceptions, the files include only reports without supporting materials or correspondence. Many of the reports include high-quality photographs (often originals) of equipment or experiments.

It remains unknown whether this record set constitutes a comprehensive collection of contract reports. Additional contract reports might be found in the publication and research record sets of the Kennedy, Rouse, Landweber, Macagno, Patel, and other researchers’ archives. Reports in this record set are likely to overlap with files in the “IIHR Grants and Contracts,” record set, which includes the administrative papers and correspondence describing some of these contract projects.
