Schnoor Receives ASME Dixy Lee Ray Award

IIHR Research Engineer Jerry Schnoor recently received the 2016 Dixy Lee Ray Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Schnoor, who also holds the Allen S. Henry Chair in Engineering and co-directs the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, attended the ASME national meeting in November in Phoenix, Ariz., where he accepted the award.
ASME’s most prestigious environmental award is named for the 17th governor of Washington and chair of the Atomic Energy Commission. Schnoor was cited for his “groundbreaking research on phytoremediation that led to the cost-effective degradation of organic chemicals in the environment; for research and practice leading to more sustainable water supplies; and for modeling the effects of acid precipitation that contributed to the passage of the Clean Air Act of 1990.”
The award, established in 1998, recognizes significant achievements and contributions in the broad field of environmental protection. It was established in honor of Ray’s advocacy to the development of those technologies that serve humanity. She believed that the engineering profession was uniquely qualified to develop and implement environmentally acceptable technologies.
