The University of Iowa is leading a new statewide research program to advance the understanding of how environmental risk factors affect human health. The Iowa Integrated Network for Science, Information, and Geospatial Health Tracking (INSIGHT) program will work to identify the factors influencing Iowa’s rising cancer rates and other health problems, prioritizing research on maternal and newborn health, neurodevelopment, and autism-related outcomes.
On June 3, 2026, a press conference at the C. Maxwell Stanley Hydraulics Laboratory at the University of Iowa (UI) announced the launch of Iowa INSIGHT. The new initiative will generate the scientific evidence needed to understand the impacts of environmental exposures on human health — from the air we breathe to the water we drink.
Iowa INSIGHT is funded by a $5 million founding gift from Sharon and Kyle Krause. The program is a collaboration between the UI Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) and IIHR—Hydroscience and Engineering. Iowa INSIGHT research will help close monitoring gaps and generate science-based information to guide solutions to emerging environmental health threats, while strengthening the health and resilience of Iowans.
