Laura Beane Freeman
Dr. Beane Freeman is a senior investigator at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG). She investigates cancer risks associated with several occupational and environmental exposures. Specifically, she studies the agricultural environment, including pesticides; industrial chemical exposures such as formaldehyde; and drinking water contaminants, such as disinfection by-products. Dr. Beane Freeman received a doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Iowa in 2003 and completed postdoctoral training in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch. She has received numerous awards recognizing her work, including two NCI Director’s Innovation awards and the DCEG Mentoring Award. She is an elected member of the Management Group of the International Epidemiology in Occupational Health Society and the National Institutes of Health Women Scientist Advisors, representing DCEG.
Mark Borchardt
Dr. Borchardt’s expertise is in the measurement, fate, transport, and health effects of human and agricultural zoonotic pathogens in the environment. He has also conducted research on nitrate contamination of groundwater. Now retired, Dr. Borchardt worked as a research microbiologist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service and as program leader for the Laboratory for Infectious Disease and the Environment, an interagency laboratory with the U.S. Geological Survey Upper Midwest Water Science Center. He received the Dr. John L. Leal Award from the American Water Works Association for his work on improving water quality and protecting public health in the United States.
Rima Habre
Dr. Habre is a professor of environmental health and spatial sciences and director of the CLIMAte-related Exposures, Adaptation, and Health Center at the University of Southern California. She is also an MPI of NEXUS: Network for Exposomics in the United States, which is the cross-NIH research coordinating center for advancing exposomics and precision environmental health. Her research aims to understand the effects of co-occurring environmental exposures, including air pollution mixtures and sources, climate-related exposures, adaptation vulnerabilities, and social stressors on the health of vulnerable populations across the life course. Dr. Habre received a Doctor of Science degree in environmental health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Keeve Nachman
Dr. Nachman is the chair of the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and strategic advisor to the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. He brings more than 20 years of experience conducting research and teaching in the field of food systems, environmental health, and risk assessment. His research focuses on applying risk sciences to decision-making in the context of diet, drinking water, soils, dust, biosolids, and other human exposures. He has published on an array of food systems and environmental health topics, including food- and water-borne chemical and microbiological hazards, epidemiologic investigations of agricultural communities, soil and dust exposure factors, cumulative impacts and risk, and the use of epidemiology and computational toxicological methods in risk assessment.
Heather Stapleton
Dr. Stapleton is the Ronie-Richelle Garcia-Johnson Distinguished Professor at Duke University. She is an environmental analytical chemist and exposure scientist in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Her research interests focus on identifying halogenated and organophosphate chemicals in building materials, furnishings, and consumer products, and estimating human exposure, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, and firefighters. Her laboratory specializes in the analysis of wearable passive samplers, and specifically silicone wristbands, to advance exposure and environmental health research. In addition, her laboratory supports analysis of biological samples for organic contaminants to support environmental health research, with an emphasis on thyroid disease and cancer. She serves as the director of the Duke University Superfund Research Center and the director of the North Carolina Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study.
Jennifer Teerlink
Dr. Teerlink leads scientific and policy work in the pesticide space to ensure protection of human health and the environment. She has expertise in designing statewide monitoring programs to characterize pesticide residues, identify contamination sources, understand how pesticides move from the site of application, and develop targeted strategies to reduce their environmental impacts.
